What to Do When You Have a Dental Emergency?

What to Do When You Have a Dental Emergency?

In cases of extreme emergencies like knocked out or an abscessed tooth, you can make an emergency appointment or call us to seek immediate dental services. However, you can do these steps to reduce discomfort before coming in for emergency dental care.

Toothache

If you are experiencing a persistent toothache, it is usually indicative that your tooth requires attention. If treatment is not sought, the severity of the pain is likely to worsen. When you are suffering from a toothache, you should:

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water to clean and unwanted debris in your mouth;
  • Place an ice pack on your cheeks to reduce swelling and numb the tooth or gums;
  • Avoid putting an aspirin on top of the tooth that can damage the gums.

Swollen or Bleeding Gums

Swollen or Bleeding Gums

If you are experiencing swollen gums, you will have pain, inflammation or infection in the gums. If treatment is not sought, this can worsen and may even lead on to gum disease. If you feel such pain,

  • Rinse the cut and gum tissues with cold water to remove unwanted debris to keep the cut clean;
  • If bleeding continues, apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze;
  • It would be best if you chewed on an ice cube or something cold to minimise the bleeding and swelling.

Broken Tooth

Broken Tooth

If you have a broken or chipped tooth, you should seek dental treatment as soon as possible no matter how seemingly minor the chip. This is to prevent further complications such as tooth decay, nerve damage and toothache. As soon as this happens, you should:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water;
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling as much as possible;
  • Avoid taking a painkiller or putting numbing gel as they can damage your gums.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you or your child’s permanent tooth has been knocked out from an injury, you must take the following necessary steps to save the teeth. Before getting to us for an emergency appointment, you should:

  • Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown or the top;
  • Avoid touching the root;
  • Carefully rinse the teeth without scrubbing;
  • If possible, reinsert the tooth back in the socket;
  • If you cannot do that, put the tooth in a small container of milk and get to the dentist’s office quickly to increase the chances of saving your tooth.

Abscessed Tooth

Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is a pocket of pus that could form in various parts of a tooth due to a bacterial infection.

This is usually caused when bacteria invade the innermost part of the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.

A dental abscess is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition that needs to be treated as soon as possible. Having a tooth abscess can cause fever, tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, a persistent toothache, swelling and a pimple-like bump on your gums near the infected tooth.

This condition is an emergency as the infection can spread into your jaw, surrounding tissue, and to other areas of the body. Before you can see the emergency dentist:

  • Rinse your mouth with mild salt water several times to reduce the pain and draw the pus to the surface.

To treat this, the pus needs to be drained out to allow for a root canal procedure or extraction.

Lost or Broken Dentures

If you have lost your denture, you must make an appointment to have one remade to restore your chewing ability as soon as possible.

If your denture has broken, do not try and replace the broken denture in your mouth nor attempt to repair the denture yourself, as this can traumatise and damage your soft tissues and make any repair difficult. You should:

  • Gently remove the broken denture away from your gums and mouth;
  • Please keep it safe and come to us.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth can sometimes erupt in a way that could affect surrounding teeth, gums or jaws, causing dental problems. If you experience minor pain and swelling from time to time, you should:

  • Clean the area by rinsing periodically with a teaspoonful of salt dissolved in warm water;
  • If the pain persists and increases in severity, a wisdom tooth removal procedure might be required.

Emergency & Night Dentistry FAQs

  • What really is categorised as a dental emergency?
    A dental emergency is characterised by pain, any sudden swelling, and a large amount of discomfort. Usually when the patient determines that they cannot help themselves, it is important to understand that oral health problems seldom fix themselves, and they won’t just quickly go away. If you have knots, swelling, or bulges on your gums you also may be experiencing a dental emergency.
  • How can I remove an object caught between teeth?
    If you happen to get a piece of food or any other very small object wedged between your teeth, you can try to very gently remove the object with dental floss. You should not use anything that is very sharp, like a pin around your teeth as it may cause damage. If what is there cannot be removed by dental floss, contact a dentist soon to schedule an appointment.
  • What are my options for relief when it comes to a Toothache?
    If you are awakened by a severe throbbing, you can brush and floss your teeth to remove any food fragments that are on your teeth. Painkillers works well for the pain, but you definitely do not want to put it directly against the gums where the aching tooth is. If the pain persists for few days, call us immediately, it may need an extraction.
  • If I have anxiety when dealing with the dentist, is it possible to be put to sleep?
    If you feel it’s necessary, nitrous oxide sedation can be used among other types of sedation for anxiety. It is nothing out of the ordinary to have anxiety when going to the dentist, and if you are facing a dire emergency, the potential for pain may unnerve you even more.
  • Should I be Concerned if my Tooth is Sensitive to Cold?
    When this happens, it is usually a sign of gums that have begun to recede, or a nerve that is symptomatic. For receding gums, you will want an evaluation from a dentist, because it may be a sign of gum disease. If it is related to the nerve issue, it could eventually lead to an abscess, and you should reach us immediately.

What Does The Emergency & Night Dentistry Procedure Involve?

Consultation:

  • Your general health condition, as well as the condition of your teeth and gums, will be thoroughly assessed, which may include having to take some necessary X-rays or scans, to determine your suitable treatment options.
  • Our dentists will then thoroughly explain your dental problem, any procedures that need to be done.

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

  • While it is difficult to predict when you will have a dental emergency, there are ways to reduce the chances of it.
  • Having a regular dental regime encourages good oral health. It is crucial to brush and floss your teeth twice a day minimally to get rid of bacterial plaque. However, if a problem arises, call your dentist and try to get the problem fixed immediately to decrease your chances of additional issues.
  • It is also essential to schedule dental check-ups from time to time for regular dental procedures like scaling and polishing to reduce the chances of unpleasant experiences.
